DAY 01: NORTH AMERICA
/ FRANKFURT. Evening departure from North
America. Dinner and breakfast are served on-board our trans-Atlantic
flight.
DAY 02: FRANKFURT / HEIDELBERG
AREA. On arrival at the Frankfurt Airport we
are met by our tour escort and motor coach. We drive swiftly through the
Heidelberg Area for dinner and overnight at our hotel. This afternoon we
have a sightseeing tour of Heidelberg - a medieval old city -
delightfully situated on the River Neckar and famous for the tale of the
Student Prince. The tour will include the castle ruins home of the
Student Prince, the university - one of the oldest in the world - and
the stone bridge. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
DAY 03: HEIDELBERG / SCHAFFHAUSEN /
ENGELBERG / MT. TITLESS / LAKE LUCERNE. This
morning we drive south to the
Black Forest region of Germany to Schaffhausen. Evergreen silence and
breathtaking views comprise our journey through the heart of the
mysterious fairy-tale country. As we drive past Hansel and Gretel
villages to Schaffausen, we pause to view the roaring Rhine Falls, the
highest in Europe and the photographer’s paradise. We will then drive
the short distance through the beautiful alpine scenery to the village
of Engelberg with its famous Benedictine monastery set below towering
Mt. Titless. We will take the gondola and cable cars through many
changes of scenery from the green valley bottom up to the high alpine
glacier region at the top of this mountain, where weather permitting, we
should be able to enjoy spectacular views of glacier crevasses and ice
falls. We then cross to Switzerland and continue past Zurich and Lucerne
to our lakeside village in an indescribably beautiful lake and mountain
setting. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
DAY 04: LAKE LUCERNE / EMMEN TAL /
LUCERNE / LAKE LUCERNE. This morning we will
tour the rolling hills of the Emmen Tal Valley. We will
visit Trachselwald Castle, the home of Hans Haslibacher and Anabaptist
leader, and also a cheese farm where they make Emmenthal Cheese. This
afternoon we will visit the world-famous resort of Lucerne, situated at
the head of the great lake. It is bright and sparkling like its famous
fountains. Here we will see the Lion Monument and Handsome boulevard and
elegant shops side-by-side with quaint, medieval streets, old wooden
bridges and peaceful flower-decked lakeside promenades. Return to our
hotel for dinner and overnight.
DAY 05: LAKE LUCERNE / ZURICH /
VADUZ / INNSBRUCK. This morning we drive to
Zurich, Switzerland's largest city and one of the worlds most important
financial centers. We will see Zwingli's famous church, the Grossmunster
Cathedral, the Fraumunster Church - with stained-glass windows by
Chagall - and the fine lakeshore district. Of special interest today
will be a visit to the Limmat River, site of the execution by drowning
of Felix Manz. We continue to the tiny independent principality of
Liechtenstein and its picture book capital of Vaduz. Nature then steals
the show with matchless viscous of 10,000 foot summits as we scale the
mighty Arlberg Pass to drive through the winter sports resort of St.
Anton and then into the Austrian Tyrol - Innsbruck - where we will see
the famed Maria Theresiastrasse, the emperor Maximillians "Golden Roof",
the Hofkirche and other points of interest. Dinner and overnight at our
hotel.
DAY 06: INNSBRUCK / GARMISCH /
OBERAMMERGAU / LINDERHOFF / MUNICH. This
morning we will proceed via Garmisch, famous winter sports area, to
fabled Neuschwanstein Castle. This magnificent
Castle, probably the most photographed in the world, was King Ludwig's
final effort to recapture an era that was already gone. Then we travel a
short distance to Linderhof to visit the Linderhoff Castle - built by
mad King Ludwig - a dazzling castle set high in the Bavarian Alps. Our
day finishes in Munich, the largest and liveliest city in Bavaria, where
we arrive in time for dinner and overnight at our hotel. Continue our
drive to the old-world wood carvers village of Oberammergau where the
Passion Play is performed every ten years. Then on to Munich for dinner
and overnight at our hotel.
DAY 07: MUNICH / SALZBURG.
Our morning sightseeing tour takes us to Herrenchiemsee to see the
castle of King Ludwig II. We then drive to Salzburg where Mozart was
born. This lovely city is full of Baroque churches that we will see. Our
guide will give us an afternoon tour through the beautiful Mirabell
Gardens. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
DAY 08: SALZBURG / VIENNA.
This morning we begin with a visit to visit the Eagle’s Nest. Then
continue to Melk to visit the Abbey. We then continue by way of
Duernstein and on to Vienna. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
DAY 09: VIENNA.
For a thousand years, the capital of the far-flung Holy Roman Empire and
Hapsburg Empires, Vienna is a charming metropolis on the Danube River.
It has lovely green parks, fine shops and some of the most incredibly
beautiful Renaissance, Baroque and Roccoco buildings in the world. Our
city tour is highlighted by a visit to the Schoenbrunn Palace, summer
home of Maria Theresia. We will also see the Imperial Hofburg Palace,
Opera House, St. Stephens Cathedral, the Spanish Riding School and the
Belvedere Palace as well as the national museums. This afternoon we have
an excursion to the Vienna Woods to visit Heiligenkreuz and Mayerling.
Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
DAY 10: VIENNA / PRAGUE.
This morning is at leisure to rest or shop. Then depart Vienna for our
journey to Prague. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
DAY
11: PRAGUE. This morning we visit the Prague
Castle - the largest ancient castle in the world. Constructed in the 9th
century by Prince Boøivoj, the castle transformed itself from a wooden
fortress surrounded by earthen bulwarks to the imposing form it has
today. Rulers made their own additions so there is a mixture of styles.
Prague castle has had four major reconstructions, but it keeps its
classical facelift it took on in the 18 century during the reign of
Maria Theresa. This afternoon is at leisure for activities of your own.
Tonight we have a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at
our hotel.
DAY 12: PRAGUE / NORTH AMERICA.
After breakfast we will transfer to the airport for our return to the
United States of America - the end of a most enjoyable journey. |
